Ask and yee shall receive…
My inbox has been flooded with requests for budget -friendly holiday dress picks so here you are! I went out of my way to find dresses that are varied in style, cut and color but all still reasonably priced.
I found this great black sequin dress from Forever 21 for those of you on the hunt for a glam’d up LBD. Sequin anything from this store can sometimes look cheap, but I checked this one out in person and it looks amazing…the mesh trim really helps! And don’t forget to add a little dose of unexpected color by pairing it with colorful shoes in order to avoid a head to toe black look.
I’m also really feeling the color navy for some odd reason and I think it’s such a cool alternative to black. The cut of this satin dress will flatter all body types and you have to check out the back view…it’s adorable! I also like the combo of black tights (for all of you up North that can’t even imagine New Year’s with bare legs) with the navy dress!!
But If I had to choose a favorite, I’d pick this green one …it has such a feminine and vintage quality about it and you’re sure to stand out in the beautiful color. I also love the sash with the deconstructed bow and the cut is so similar to something Rouland Mouret would design. Oh, and let’s not forget about the accessories…I went for a metallic theme here to make it more festive and holiday appropriate…but those snake embossed bronze heels are something I suggest you try and incorporate into as many outfits as possible…they’re to die for!!
Style Links (T to B): Black Sequin Dress $27.80, Colorblock Shoes $49.99, Navy Satin Dress $34.99, Black Heels $39.99, Green Bow Dress $34.99, Snake Sandals $20.99
One of my favorite on-line retailers, ASOS, is unfortunately based in London with no stores in the USA…that I know of. Well today I got an early Christmas present from them in my inbox…
$6.00 shipping to the USA!!!
Place your order by December 4th (which is actually 12/3 for us) and they’ll only charge you as much as Old Navy does to send you much cuter and more fashion forward items all the way from the UK!
They currently have an incredible selection of Holiday dresses so be sure to check them out along with their amazing belts, shoes and jewelry…I promise you won’t be disappointed!!
Now that Thanksgiving is officially over, I can start working on one of my favorite Holiday traditions! I’m one of those people that still insist on sending a Christmas card so I’m always on the hunt for something truly unique to send out to my loved ones…
I don’t like sending anything too Christmas-y so when I found these I bought them right away. I love the vintage quality about them and they’re just festive enough…no dancing snowmen or fat Santa’s on my Christmas cards! And as a bonus, I get to save money on postage because these are actually postcards…
Check out the rest of the adorable products from Parrot Design Studio here.
The day after Thanksgiving might be one of the worst days of the year to get dressed…you feel fat, overstuffed and pretty lethargic after eating all that turkey!
So here’s my advice…skip the jeans/pants and go for a comfortable pair of leggings paired with a loose tunic and a cozy sweater. You’ll look stylish and put-together, but the loose layers will mask any post-holiday bulge and more importantly, you’ll feel comfortable. If you’re venturing out to shop, or have plans that go beyond channel surfing and vegging out on the couch, opt for a chic pair of flat boots instead of heeled shoes for added comfort.
And if this look is still too minimal for your taste, add a colorful scarf and/or and a wide belt to help define your waist… something we all need help with on this day and throughout the Holiday season!
Style Links: Cable Knit Cardigan $26.90, Plaid Tunic $26.90, Belt $6.80, Tights $9.50, Scarf $12.50 Boots $74.99, Handbag $19.99
I have a confession to make…
I totally lost all control at Saks (thanks Melissa!) and totally splurged on a pair of Christian Louboutin Sigourney “Shoeties”. They were originally $1030 and I got them for $250!! I have been dying for a pair of these and considering the pair I wanted at Baker’s was $84.99, spending an extra $160 for the Loubs seemed totally reasonable. I’m having a bit of buyer’s remorse because I hate spending more than $100 on anything, so now I am brainstorming on all the possible outfits I can wear these with…
One of the biggest trends this season has been lace and nothing goes better with lace, than leather. I love the idea of pairing something as romantic and feminine as lace with something tough and edgy like leather, but there are some definite no-no’s when wearing this fabric.
1. A little lace goes a long way, so opt for lace accents…no head to toe lace please.
2. At the risk of looking like a streetwalker, stay away from colored lace and stick to black and nude.
And if you’re not comfortable in the Prada-inspired lace pieces, then try a great accessory, like shoes or a handbag instead. Here are my picks for some of the best lace out there, and don’t worry, they’re all priced much lower than my fabulous new shoeties!!!
Style Links: Handbag $16.80, Vest $19.90, Lace Tights $19.99, Racerback Tank $28.00, Dress $40.80, Shoes $20.00, Silk Tank $7.99
I’m still in Dallas, so I’ve been quite the mall rat lately taking advantage of all the amazing in-store markdowns.
I usually don’t stop into Express when I’m looking for accessories, but I did last night and was pleasantly surprised at the selection. I picked up three gorgeous bags, including this one with the darling rosette details, all at 40% off!! The most expensive one was $35.80 and it’s a huge faux-snake hobo that will become my new favorite every-day bag!
But make sure you go to the store, because the selection on- line does not do them justice!. Oh yea, and as a bonus I got $50 in Express Cash for spending $100!!
While I’m all for shopping at Forever 21 and Wal-Mart when I’m buying for myself, I can’t bear the thought of actually giving someone a gift from one of these stores…I’m not even that cheap! So here’s some helpful suggestions for gifting those special people in your life with a pricey present on a less than luxe budget!
1. Buy items in rich, luxurious fabrics like cashmere! Cashmere Hoodie $79.50
2. Buy from the lower priced designer labels like Marc by Marc Jacobs! MJ Charm Bangle $63.90
3. Pick unique, practical gifts that the recipient wouldn’t buy for themselves! Juicy Couture Gloves $37.90
4. Don’t underestimate the impact of presentation…when something comes from a really nice store, chances are the packaging will truly make an impression! Barneys New York Bangle $89.00
5. Buy items that are personal! If someone is a traveler, buy them something that will help them travel in style! Leather Passport Holder $35.00
6. Buy for the home! This way, you don’t have to buy individual gifts and you can buy something more substantial! Kalorik Espresso Maker $99.00
Following the incredible success of their last collection, Payless has once again partnered with Abaete (one of my absolute favorite designers) for a new Holiday/Resort collection. The shoes sold out so quickly last time that I wasn’t actually able to buy a pair, but this time I’ve set a reminder in my Blackberry calendar so I won’t miss out! This adorable wedge is one of my favorite styles from the Abaete selection, and until I can afford the real thing– this will do just fine!
Lela Rose and Patricia Field will also contribute to the Holiday/Resort collection which will retail from $34-55. Click here to see the entire lookbook
Twelve by Twelve, Warrior Dress $39.00
Yesterday, I had the pleasure of working with Danieda Polanco on a Budget Fashion segment for her show, Primer Impacto. For those of you non-Spanish speakers, Primer Impacto is the equivalent of the NBC Nightly News and is one of the highest rated shows on Univison.
Since we were discussing chic on the cheap, we headed to my Mecca, Forever 21 to find the best budget buys! Yesterday was like a total dream come true…I got to work with one of the senior merchandisers (they’re the incredibly talented people who dress the mannequins) and they even opened the store early for me to shop privately…I totally felt like J.LO!!! Just imagine… shopping at Forever 21 before the crowds have turned the store upside down…a perfectly merchandised store with not one shirt out of place…and being the first to preview 250 boxes of brand new, never before seen merchandise! I truly had my pick of the litter and felt like a kid in candy store!
For the show, I was asked to select 5 must-have items under $50 and then show viewers how to mix and match them to get the most out of their wardrobe. Here’s just one of the many outfits I put together for the show centered around this gorgeous satin dress:
Style Links: Shoes $12.50, Satin Dress $39.00, Cardigan $36.00, Gold Cuff $5.80, Beaded Clutch $24.80
This time of year I say the more bling the better! Whether you opt for a statement-making cocktail ring, chandelier earrings or a bold jeweled cuff you really can’t go wrong.
Jewelry also happens to be also the easiest and in this case, the cheapest way to update any outfit. Try one of these pieces with oversized faux gems to add some sparkle and shine to your look!
Style Links (clockwise): Cuff $8.80, Chandeliere Earrings $6.80, Flower Studs $6.80, Rose Gem Bracelet $3.80, Earrings $3.80 , Rose Ring $3.80
Saddle Bag $39.50
I’ve come to appreciate cross-body/shoulder bags a lot more over the last few days. Blame it on the crappy weather we’ve been having in Philly, but carrying a handbag and an umbrella has been quite a challenge. I can’t quite manage to keep both myself and my handbag dry, and holding two things at once while trying to check my Black Berry just doesn’t work for me.
I picked up a cross-body bag at a Thrift store over the weekend and it’s quickly become my new favorite accessory. It instantly gives my outfit a totally different feel and the practicality-which I never thought I’d care about in a handbag- is pretty amazing!
Fold Over Turn-lock Bag $9.99
I’ve also noticed a lot of celebrities have been wearing the long shoulder bag out at night, which is actually pretty genius. No more putting your clutch down at some sketchy club and having to check for it every two minutes…just thrown it over your shoulder and you know that’s it’s safe! Lauren Conrad has been spotted all over LA with her new petite Chanel bag and I have to say, I think it looks really cute…there’s something very 80’s-tastic about it!
The bag to the right is a great option for an evening style shoulder bag, if your last trip to the Penny Arcade didn’t quite add up to an extra thousand dollars to spend on a Chanel one.
Front Cross Strap Dress $25.50
I haven’t quite decided where I’m going in this dress…but I’m totally buying it. It’s only $25.50 but with the attention to detail, pin tucks, the sleek cut and the beautiful peacock color this definitely looks like something from Abaete that Rachel Bilson might wear.
I usually stay away from fitted dresses because right now I’m totally into less structured and voluminous pieces, but this dress will certainly bring me over to the tight side. I’ve seen a lot of gorgeous Herve Leger dresses on a slew of celebrities and have admired them from afar…but now this dress feels like a baby step in the right direction!
Clockwise: Luggage Tag $4.80, Dress $4.99, Leopard Bangle $4.80, Beanie $5.00, Ring $4.80
Style does not just apply to beauty and fashion…it also applies to Gadgets and this is by far one of the most stlyish gadgets I’ve seen in a looooong time.
The Blackberry Bold just became available yesterday for AT&T users and now Wal-Mart is now offering a 100% rebate on the phone, effectively discounting its $199 tag with a two-year contract. The offer is only valid online, but it requires a $80 per month plan (at the least) with 1350 minutes and unlimited text messaging.
But If you’re in the market for new phone with all the bells and whistles of an iPhone it might be wise to wait for the extremely promising BlackBerry Storm, due out later this Holiday Season.

There’s no reason not to look good while you cast your vote this year…and Zac Posen agrees with me. Click here to watch his video urging people to VOTE and to post their Election Day outfit for the world to see. Here’s my “Blue State” inspired, budget friendly outfit that will help get you in the political mood! With fair weather expected, let’s hope for a HUGE turnout today and more importantly, let’s HOPE for change. Happy Voting!
Style Links: Cardigan $29.90, Shirt $9.99, Skirt $19.90, Belt $7.80 Shoes $34.50, Hat $10.99, Earring $5.00, Tote $17.99
The big sale starts tomorrow in stores and online
!! You’ll find discounts up to 40% or more
on clothes, shoes, handbags, and accessories. I have my eye on this great faux-fur swing coat, but there’s plenty of options to tempt you. And, if you use your Nordstrom card, you can earn twice the rewards points through the end of the year.
to find the Nordstrom store nearest you!
I saw a lot of superhero costumes out last night and it got me thinking about their most precious accessory…the cape! I bought one on a recent trip to Canada and have been jonesing to wear it. A cape is really unexpected and a much more stylish alternative to a coat. I can’t wait to finally bust it out this weekend and feel very British and Sherlock Holmes-y in it!
I spent about $100 for my cape, so I was quite annoyed when I found this much cuter one from Justsweet on Macy’s.com. It was $138, but it’s been marked down to $33.99 so you’re getting 75% off the original price.
And on a side note, if you want to try this look, make sure you purchase a cape with slits for your arms…otherwise, you’ll have to reach your hands out from under it to do anything…kind of annoying if you ask me.
Every once in a while I’ll post a discount code for Friends & Family, but there’s just too many to online coupon codes out there to post one each day. Not to mention, it’s a little repetitive and there’s a much easier and more efficient way to find great online coupons for your favorite stores…
A friend tipped me off to a wonderful site called Deal Hunting and it’s super simple to use. Just type in the name of the store (they have deals for over 1500 online stores!) or search by a category and all of the corresponding coupons will come up. Happy Shopping!!
